Regenerative Tourism in Belize: Traveling Better with Muy’Ono Resorts

For more than two decades, the conversation around responsible tourism has centered on doing less harm. Today, that’s no longer enough. The future of travel must be regenerative, leaving the world better than we found it. At Muy’Ono Resorts, that idea isn’t a trend. It’s the foundation of our Travel Better initiative. Here’s how we bring regenerative tourism in Belize to life through every guest experience.

What Is Regenerative Tourism?

And Why It Matters More Than Ever

“Sustainable travel” has been the industry standard for years, but sustaining something isn’t enough if it’s already under pressure. Instead of simply reducing harm, regenerative tourism actively restores ecosystems and supports communities. With its reefs, jungles, and deeply rooted cultural traditions, the impact of travel is amplified. Choosing responsible travel in Belize means protecting what makes the destination extraordinary in the first place.

How Muy’Ono Resorts Puts Regenerative Tourism Into Practice

Regenerative Belize Agriculture At Muy’Ono Farms

Muy’Ono Farms is a six-acre operation in the Cayo District that supplies resorts with fresh, organic produce. The farm runs on a continuous growing cycle, ensuring that what’s harvested is always being replenished. Menus across the resorts follow this natural rhythm, shifting with the seasons and what the land provides rather than relying on imported goods.

The approach is deeply rooted in regenerative practices that prioritize long-term soil health, biodiversity, and resource conservation. From traditional Mayan moon planting cycles to solar-powered irrigation and natural pest management, every decision is designed to work with the environment, not against it.

      • 400+ plant varieties, including native and heirloom Belizean species
      • Hand-cultivated crops with composting, crop rotation, and companion planting
      • Solar-powered, gravity-fed irrigation supported by rainwater systems
      • Integrated pest management using natural deterrents and biological controls

Eliminating Waste & Rethinking Infrastructure

Regeneration doesn’t stop at the farm. It appears in the details that most guests never see and in the ones they do. Every Muy’Ono Resort has implemented thoughtful initiatives designed to reduce waste, conserve resources, and minimize environmental impact. They’re part of a broader shift toward operating in a way that aligns with the environment, rather than working against it.

        • Eliminated single-use plastics and styrofoam
        • Transitioned to solar and wind energy
        • Implemented rainwater catchment systems
        • Uses reclaimed materials for construction

Supporting Belize Communities

Belize isn’t just shaped by its landscapes; it’s shaped by its people. Muy’Ono approaches community investment as a core part of the experience, supporting the livelihoods, culture, and connections that make each stay meaningful. Since 2018, that commitment has helped create over 300 jobs and strengthened the communities at the heart of each resort.

Through the Nightly Donation program, a portion of every reservation goes directly to local schools, nonprofits, and grassroots initiatives, with guests invited to match contributions. Together, we have generated more than $1.2 million BZD in local support.

Guests can also participate through the Pack for a Purpose initiative, bringing requested supplies for schools and organizations. Beyond direct giving, Muy’Ono intentionally partners with locally owned businesses, from guides and excursion providers to restaurants and artisans, ensuring tourism dollars circulate within the communities guests come to experience.
